On/off switch table saw

Ihave a 10 in. table saw (Delta 110 volt). I replaced the switch but it keeps tripping the breaker. I tried several switches but with the same results. I can straight wire the motor and it runs. I am familiar with simple wiring but this has me stumped. Please e-mail if you have any suggestions? Thanks,Earl [email protected]

I have a Powermatic III Model 66 table saw with a 5 HP motor. Saw motor will not start unless I remove Switch Box cover and hold down the on switch. As soon as I let off the switch it comes back out and the saw shuts down. That is to say, the switch cannot hold itself in, at the on position. I'm wondering if the entire switch assembly has to be replaced or if it is repairable without a lot of work and trouble and buying a lot of various parts? Thank you

Replace the entire switch assembly, otherwise you will be doing a lot of work and buying individual parts that very well won't be available.

I am borrowing my brothers Craftsman model 137.218240 table saw. Unfortunately, it has a on/off switch problem (I believe). Yesterday, I was able to use it all day although, at first, I had difficulty getting it to turn "on". After about a dozen attempts (with no noise coming from the "on" switch activation) I called my brother who verified that the saw had this problem the last time he used it. He suggested I keep trying and I did and several activations later I heard a "thunk" noise twice (kind of like a locked rotor type sound), then finally it turned on a few trys later and all was well yesterday, just cross cutting some thin laminate flooring. However, this morning, same problem! However, after getting it going for two small cuts, I now cannot get it going, I just get the occasional "thunk" or momentary blade spinning! My questions are as follows: 1. Can I get inside this saw to see whether I can either repair, replace or bypass this switch myself. 2. Are you familiar with this type of problem and know of a solution? Manufacturer defect? By the way, the saw is not under warranty and Sear's service center is way too far away for me. also, this problem exists regardless whether I'm using an extension cord or not so I know it's not a low-voltage issue. Thanks in advance, Wayne

You can chec wiring or switch with an ohmmeter to determine if it is bad. You should be able to remove a few screws to access the inside of the saw fairly easily. You can easily by-pass the switch by twisting the wires together. Though it will have to be untwisted to shut off again. You could just unplug it. There isn't much to these.

Makita table saw switch wiring

After much trial and error, a little smoke, and wrecking one replacement switch, I solved a similar problem with my Craftsman Cmpd Mitre saw. Different saw, but likely the same principles are involved. If the switch is a double pole single throw switch, with one side normally open (N0) and the other normally closed (NC), and the saw has a separate wire for the brake, this will probably work. One side of the switch should have contacts that are normally open (NO) and only connect when the switch is ON. The Hot (Black) wire from the plug connects to the wire on the machine side (red or maybe black) through this NO side. So, connect these two wires via this NO side and the saw will run when the switch is ON but will have no brake; so far so good. There should be another wire (Not the neutral white) which is the brake wire. This gets connected to one of the connection sites of the Normally Closed (NC) side of the switch. From the other connection site of this NC side run a short "jumper" wire (of the same guage as the other wires) to the Machine Side of the NO side of the switch (same place as that Red or Black? wire above) . What seems to happen is this: There's no power to the machine or the brake when the switch is OFF. Turn it ON and power goes from Hot through the NO (now closed) side and the saw runs. The brake doesn't run when the saw runs because the NC switch is now open. Turn the switch OFF and the NC switch is in fact closed and power is transfered to the brake via the jumper wire from the still spinning armature which now acts as a generator (alternator?). Once the brake has done its job and the armature stops spinning there's no power anywhere until you turn the switch ON again. Or at least that's the theory, and in my case it works; no more smoke.

My very old Craftsman 10" Table Saw does not power on. While rip cutting some plywood, I errored and caused the blade to bind. Before I was able to power off the saw, the motor stopped. I thought I had popped a circuit breaker, but did not. Power to the table saw was still hot, yet when I power on the table saw it does nothing -- it's dead. The RESET button also does nothing. Does this sound like a broken switch or the motor? Craftsman 10" Table Saw - Model #113.295752 Please advise how to fit or whether to get a new table saw.

Go to and put in your model number. Look at the motor and wiring section. Look at item 16. The motor overload protector. (probably your reset button) WIth saw unplugged, unwire one sid of this switch and test with an ohm meter. You should read through the switch. If it is open then that's why the saw doesn't work. Many of this type of oveload requires quite a push to reset as you're flexing a klixon disc back to make contact. If is open and you can't reset, it's available there although a bit high priced.

I have a Craftsman table saw a few weeks back had problems getting the saw to run....would have to hit the switch several times to make it run. Once it was running it was good until I shut it down, then I would have to hit the switch 5 or so times to get it to run again. Today it did the same thing and now just wont run. The blade turns freely by hand and is not binded or anything. Does this sound like a bearing? Brushes?
