Guide :Saws : Electric Table Saws

My tablesaw wont speed up and run. Bosch 4000 ten inch. It makes a klunk and starts to turn and slowly speeds up until its running, but still makes a knocking sound

Ten inch saw, its frequently exposed to moisture on outside work...It fails to run smoothly, switch or capacitor or something damaged perhaps? can you tell me what would cause this. the bearings turn freely and its easily turned over by hand and spins but the motor is not working properly. Thanks- love the saw, until now.

Is it spinning the blade at all? If it is then it is unlikely to be an electrical fault. Have you considered a motor bearing fault? If the motor bearings are worn, it could turn freely by hand, but when powered up it would stutter and stall. The motor is basically a big electro-magnet so if the armature has enough lateral movement, when it is magnetized it could rub against the stator. If the machine is buzzing, but not spinning the blade it is more than likely going to be caused by a faulty capacitor as this is the component that gives the motor the initial 'kick' in the right direction to get it spinning.

Saw runs for a few seconds then shuts off. It's making a loud sound I have not heard before. I can get it to run without a blade, but it still makes the noise which seems to be coming from under the table. I've blown out all dust and inspected drive train and all seems to be in order. Problem started after I made several 1" wide dado cuts in some MDO. Dust created was very fine powder. Help!!!

The motor that drives your table saw (ref. # 220, part # 651195-00) has both a run and start capacitor. If your motor turns freely by hand however seems to lock in one position or turns very slowly when you switch it on, indicates that the one or both of the capacitors may have failed. Easy to check, remove capacitor covers and capacitors making note of position. With digital meter set to uF, check/test capacitor by first shorting the two tabs together with insulated tool to drain stored charge if any, then connect leads. They should read to within 5% plus or minus of printed mfd rating. Parts are available at www.grainger.com or commercial HVAC dealer or ebay. Take note of the capacitor size that you order so that it will fit under cover. Replace with same mfd range and same or higher voltage. If capacitors test ok then look closely at motor windings for discoloration (burned windings) or melted twine used to wrap coils together. If windings look burned or brown/black replace motor. Good luck

I was given this saw for free, it does not start when i flip the "on" switch. I have my volt meter and have checked the wiring from the extension cord and through the switch to make sure the control board is getting electricity...and it seems like it is, but still the armature doesn't spin or anything? It doesn't make a sound at all?

If you have verified that the cord and switch have continuity through them, I would check the brushes on the motor and make sure that they are making contact with the communtator bars, and that they of acceptable length, and move freely within the brush holders. If this is so, you may have an open in the windings of the armature or field, or a dead bar on the armature itself. While you are in there, I would also check the condition of all wires, and test accordingly.

Cuts not square-bevel adjustment

Here's something to try. Get a dial indicator or a drop indicator to measure the blade wobble. Clamp the indicator to your miter gage or use a magnetic base or whatever. Position the indicator so that it contacts the side of the blade as near the outside diameter as possible, then rotate the blade by hand. If there is any warp to the blade, or bend in the arbor, or something out of square where the blade mounts on the arbor, this will pick it up. If that is all good, maybe you have a couple of teeth that were miss-sharpened and are sticking out to the side more than they should (causing a virtual wobble at the tooth end). You could position the indicator on the side of a tooth, then slowly rotate the blade backwards looking for the max reading on each tooth. You should repeat this on the other side of the blade too. Total wobble should only be a few thousandths. Good luck!

My Powermatic Model 64A table saw is 10 years old and has been lightly used as a hobby. It's powered to run on 230 volts. Beginning two weeks ago, the motor has begun to shut down during use. Sometimes it will re-start and work fine for an entire day and other times it will not re-start at all. Must dust collector runs on the same electrical circuit without problem. The table saw problem occurs with and without the dust collector drawing power. Tim in Knoxville Does this sound like a bad switch, lose electrical connection or a motor problem? Or, could it be something really simple that I'm overlooking?

Does wiggling the cord cause the problem?

I have a Craftsman table saw a few weeks back had problems getting the saw to run....would have to hit the switch several times to make it run. Once it was running it was good until I shut it down, then I would have to hit the switch 5 or so times to get it to run again. Today it did the same thing and now just wont run. The blade turns freely by hand and is not binded or anything. Does this sound like a bearing? Brushes?

The mtor electrically connects with its own plug to the switch unfront. When i turn it own, it starts to run, with the blade turning. then it slows down and kicks off the breaker in my garage. I checked th belt, it is loose, even after tightening it up, it stills does this. The motor turns freely and so does the blade and pully. What do I need to do?

1. try again to tightening the belt and check the alignment of pully or maybe you should replace the belt, if the belt wear or tear.
