Unable to loosen flange to remove disc on angle grinder

I have been using my grinder to cut masonry. It is brand new. However now I can't seem to loosen the outer flange to take the disc off and put in another. I tried using a pipe on the spanner for more leverage but ended up snapping one of the pins off of the spanner. I have another spanner and hope someone has a solution.

Unable to loosen flange to remove disc on angle grinder

What sort of disc do you have on there at the mo? If its just an abrasive disc the easiest way to remove it is to use a hacksaw to cut the disc sideways so that you are actually sawing it out between the lock nut and rear flange. This will release the pressure on the nut. If it is a diamond blade and you have already snapped a pin spanner then I would suggest securing the blade in a vice and using a set of stiltsons/pipe wrench. While in the vice you could also try using a punch in the pin holes to shock it round a bit, then the pin spanner (and leverage if needed).

I have a brand new Grinder 230mm and now need to change the grinding disc however I cannot get the locking flange off - I have detroyed one spanner, and purchased a stronger one, but still no good. can anyone help? and will this happen every time I attempt to change a disc (did not think I tensioned it up to tight) - wellsy

Try turning it the opposite way. Instead of loosening it, you may be tightening it. Reverse threads on these machines are necessary to keep the flange from flying off by itself. Joe

Disc removal We are having real trouble removing our disc from our Bosch angle grinder, we have the correect spanner and have pressed the button to disengage the blade but it is just so stiff we cannot shift it, anybody got any ideas?

The button does not disengage the blade, it only locks the blade/motor from spinning so you can remove the locking nut. Lock the spindle/motor/ blade, from moving and then remove the locking nut or disk. Should be counter-clockwise.

I have an older Black and Decker "Heavy Duty" 4 1/2" angle grinder (CAT 4246-09 Typ 1 SER 74136). I got it second hand and am not sure if you can help me because of that, but I have NO idea how to loosen the disc in order to replace it. I have had a couple of people look at it and they were stumped also. I would assume that there would be a button or a lever that would jam the disc to allow me to loosen the bolt/nut. I have a wrench that fits the rotating bolt below the disc, but like I mentioned, I have no clue how to prevent the disc from rotating while I loosen that bolt. Any help would be great. Thanks!

Give it a tip off a hammer and chicel will loosen it beter hit the spanner

Bosch angle grinder acts like its burnt out but motor resistance values suggest not

Hi Brian, running your angle grinder on reduced voltage (through overloading the petrol generator) will have caused the current in the grinder to be higher than it should be. This may not be what you expect, but it is a characteristic of rotating machines, they behave differently to resistive machines such as heating elements. You have not indicated how you come to the conclusion that the windings test OK. If you have just checked with an ohm-meter and see a continuity reading, this does not eliminate the possibility that the overheating resulting from over-current has broken down the insulation (evidenced by the smell and sparks) and you have short circuited windings. The grinder will run without a suppression capacitor, it is just there to minimise interference with you neighbour's (or your wife/girlfriend/daughter's :) ) radio. Replacing the capacitor will not restore your grinder, I reckon you have killed it, in spite of the fact that running it on a healthy supply was to quickest way to cool it effectively.

Disc flies off when grinder stops

Yes the above is correct with the question "are the threads the right size." but it can also be because u are not slowing the grinder down before stopping it. if the grinder stopps to soon the disk will stay moving. so the disk will fly off. i had the same problem with a pnuematic grinder. sometimes it is the operaters fault not the tools. " an object in motion aloways stays stays in motion till an outside force dissrupts it."

I borrowed a B&D 7750 3 to cut off the legs on a wire shelf system. I would like to replace the grinding disc but it appears to need a special tool to remove the disc. Is that correct? The owner says he has nothing but can't remember how to remove the disc.

Yes you need an angle grinder spanner/wrench. It is like a tool with two pins that fit in the holes of the grinder disc securing nut. You can see a picture of one here: http://images.toolspot.co.uk/Angle%20Grinder%20Accessories/Angle%20Grinder%20Spanner%20For%20412in.jpgThey do come in different sizes, but you can also buy adjustable ones. Your best bet is to take the grinder to the local hardware store, big box outlet or anywhere power tools are sold and they should have a grinder spanner to suit your grinder.
