My DREMEL 1680 Variable speed 16" scroll saw will not turn on.

The saw I have had for 5 years and is my second scroll saw. Today after using it just 3 days ago I attempted to use it and it would not turn on. The light comes on so I know it has power. I pulled each of the brishes out and they are still almost new with well over 1 1/2 inch on material left. I have attempted to reset the reset button but it seems to be in the up position and I cannot get it to click or move. Do you have any suggestions before I have to take it to a repair centre.

My DREMEL 1680 Variable speed 16" scroll saw will not turn on.

As a result of the power being on to the attached light I knew it was not a power source problem so I took the fuse area cover off(with the machine unplugged) and saw there were no loose connections in that area. I then removed the front control area where the two swithes for the saw and light were. I took off the two wires on the saw switch and then plugged the saw in and jumped the two wires together. The saw worked!!!!!!. I then changed the light switch over to the saw switch location and the switch works . It appears it was a faulty switch. Today I will call the Dremel 1-800- number and order a new switch. Bernie Lutes

My saw seems to have two speeds now. Fast and warp speed. It does not start slow at all. My husband took it apart to check the tension rod and wedge and when he put it back together accidently nipped the wires. So he soldered them back together obviously each colour to each colour so no red to black for instance. It was only after he did this that I have the speed problem. It turns out that the rod and wedge are not stripped like the repair techs thought it may may. I thought the tension knob was the problem because the grooves are worn smooth on the top where the rod fits in. I have that part ordered but now I have the super fast speed problem and it goes so fast that it seems to shake the blade out of the holders and I have no fine control when tryng intricate cuts. What may be causing this problem now?? I am getting so frustrated with this saw that has worked fine for 6 years and now loses tension and now races in speed.

Hi, I fear that the "Nipping" of those wires may have "Spiked" the speed controller, as this indeed, is the symptom of a faulty motor speed controller, I have seen it many times in my shop, you will need to most likely replace it. You will need to get a workshop service manual, to be able to determine the parts number and how to wire it in once sourced. Either contact Dewalt direct and ask for a service manual, or Google for one using the exact make and model number Please use the link below to choose your location and contact Dewalt direct. good luck

My DW788 scroll saw will not turn on, at first it would go off, then in a little bit it would turn on. Replaced fuse and brushes and still won't come on.

The on/off switch get saw dust in it and will not make contact so it will not turn on. I suggest that you remove the switch and clean it with an air hose if you have one. If not you can check the switch with meter and see if that is the fault. If non of these suggestions work for you or if you want more help let me suggest that you log ontowww.scrollsawvilage.comAnd ask this same question there. It is a free site for scrollers and has many helpful and knowledgable people there that would live to help you. Also they have many tutorials and free patterns.

DW788 blows the fuse immediatly. I purchased it about a year ago and have finally gotten around to using it, so the warranty has expired. I took it apart and saw that a circuit trace below one of the diodes has fried. The motor turns freely (no binding). Question... what are the chances that I need to relace the motor in addition to the circuit board?

Can you bypass the motor speed controller(circuit board) and hook the line cord directly to the motor? then if it runs at full speed and doesn't over-heat ,you know its still good

Saw has no power.

Does the motor continue to run, but the arm stops? It sounds like the set screw on the motor shaft is loose. See the exploded view at this link. It's called out as # 97

How to install air hose on dw780 scroll saw - Dewalt DW788 Heavy Duty 20" Variable Speed Scroll Saw: DW7881 Worklight

I found other sources that suggested heating the end of the hose with hot water or a hair dryer. Once it softens slightly you can push it on the metal ball with your hand. A hair dryer did not work for me, so I set the end in almost boiling water for 2 minutes. I tried shorter amounts of time first, but it took a full 2 minutes to work for me.

Unfortunatly the speed controls cannot be repaired, they can only be replaced. You will have to find a Ryobi dealer in your area and get a new speed controler.
