Burning electric tool brushes

I just changed the brushes in my Delta tablesaw and I'm still getting alot of flash coming from the motor. There doesn't appear to be a particular way to insert them. Do you have any suggestions? Thanks, MR

How can i replacethe carbon brushes on my angle grinder as they are totally and completely worn off

Buy the new brushes from the manufacturer. You already have the old ones out - put the new ones in the same way you took the old ones out.

Bosch 4000 tablesaw won't start. Brushes replaced

I found that the remaining problem was a intermittent at the switch, which disassembly and cleaning resolved. Tilting the motor / blade assembly down allows access from below, to the 3 screws fastening the controller circuit board cover on the brush end of the motor. From there, one can easily test exposed wires for power supply, see that brushes are contacting and clean accumulated sawdust.

Bosch angle grinder acts like its burnt out but motor resistance values suggest not

Hi Brian, running your angle grinder on reduced voltage (through overloading the petrol generator) will have caused the current in the grinder to be higher than it should be. This may not be what you expect, but it is a characteristic of rotating machines, they behave differently to resistive machines such as heating elements. You have not indicated how you come to the conclusion that the windings test OK. If you have just checked with an ohm-meter and see a continuity reading, this does not eliminate the possibility that the overheating resulting from over-current has broken down the insulation (evidenced by the smell and sparks) and you have short circuited windings. The grinder will run without a suppression capacitor, it is just there to minimise interference with you neighbour's (or your wife/girlfriend/daughter's :) ) radio. Replacing the capacitor will not restore your grinder, I reckon you have killed it, in spite of the fact that running it on a healthy supply was to quickest way to cool it effectively.

Milwaukee 6153-20 grinder is running extremely hot.

Your grinder is either working too hard because of broken or seized bearings or the fan is broken or detached from the armature. Take the brushes out then remove the four screws holding the gear housing on the motor housing. Remove the armature and check the fan and both bearings. If the armature bearings and fan are OK check the bearings and gear teeth in the gear housing.

I have this grinder, when i plug it in and turn it on it starts smoking and has an electrical burning smell. Is this the brushes going out? and it doesnt seem like it is going full speed. Is there a fix out there or is this trash?

Brushes usually won't start smoking on power up. Sounds like shorted windings. I would recommend a new unit rather than risking a fire. I would also recommend a professional brand if it is something you will be using a lot. In the long run it will save you money.
